It dawned on McAllister during the council meeting that he, too, was homeless for about five years, from roughly 1990 to 1995.

While not actually sleeping in his car or living on the street, McAllister crashed in the back of a furniture store he worked at, stayed with friends for about four different periods, and moved in with his parents for close to a year.

"I felt for them," he says of the homeless he saw that night. "I realized that was me for the first time."

Asked how the experience affects how he looks at homeless people today, he says simply, "I get it."

He gets that it can happen to anybody, no matter how high they are on the career ladder. He gets that problems tend to multiply when times are tough. Losing your job is one thing, but when your lender won't help you on your home loan, when your family life starts to crumble, when your self-worth starts to crater; then it's so easy to let it all slip away and end up where he was for so long.
