The name Jackalope Ranch says a lot about this six-acre property outside Dripping Springs: whimsical, rustic, abstract and comprised of parts from pre-existing structures.

Owner and California transplant Sallie Trout envisioned the ranch as a full-time retreat when she and her husband, Jeff Cline, left the Los Angeles area more than 10 years ago. During several years, she and Austin-based architect Chris Krager, of KRDB Architects, built this unique, multilevel home using recycled and green materials, building literally on top of the original "ugly house," as Trout calls it. The property, which claims 300 feet of frontage on the Pedernales River, includes a 15,000 gallon rainwater-collection system, radiant floor heating and many other green features.

The principal behind Trout Studios, Trout is an innovative builder, sculptor and furnituremaker who apprenticed in California with the late Sam Maloof, furniture designer and master woodworker. Her work has appeared in Dwell magazine; her furniture in showrooms across the country, and she's been on TV shows such as "House Beautiful" and "The Christopher Lowell Show."

Brave Space Design is a group of three Brooklyn-based designers concentrating on bringing modular, multi-functional objects into the home and office setting.
